Wordle game info
Gameplay
The goal in Wordle is to guess a word in six attempts. The original version used words with five letters, but the game on our website has flexible word length from 4 to 11 letters. Each guess must be a valid word.
After each guess, feedback is given in Mastermind-style. Each letter in the guessed word is marked as green, yellow or grey:
- Green: The letter is correct and in the right position.
- Yellow: The letter is correct but not in the right position.
- Grey: The letter does not occur in the target word.
If the guessed word has multiple instances of the same letter, these will only be colored green or yellow if the target word also has multiple instances of the letter. For example, if the player guesses "paper" and the target word is "print", only one P will be colored and the second P will be grey.
Difficulties
Our Wordle version has three difficulties:
- Normal: Guesses must be valid words.
- Hard: Green letters must be reused in their correct position, and yellow letters must be reused as well.
- Ultra Hard: Even stricter than Hard. Yellow letters must be reused, in a different position from where they were clued. Grey letters can’t be used again.
Special features
Our version of Wordle has various special features. One is the word length, which can be changed from 4 letters to 11 letters.
If you don’t like the default color scheme that is used, you can switch to the dark theme and use high-contrast colors for feedback.
Lastly you can change the keyboard layout.
Tips and tricks
- Use a strong starting word with a good mix of popular vowels (A, E) and consonants (L, N, M, R, S). Instead of immediately trying to guess the target word, use the first guess to gather information about the target word. The most commonly used starting words are adieu, audio, stare, raise, and arise.
- Take a totally different second word to erase as many letters as possible.
- Don’t forget that the target word can have the same letter multiple times (e.g. robot).
- Take your time for each guess. The goal is to guess the word in as few tries as possible, not to guess it as fast as possible.
- Don’t forget to use US English spelling.
Developer
Wordle is developed by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Wales. It was released in October 2021.
In January 2022, The New York Times bought the game.
Variations
Due to its popularity, many variations on Wordle were created. One category is the same game in other languages. Our website has the game in Spanish, German (also referred to as 6mal5), French (also referred to as Le Mot), Dutch (also referred to as Woordle), Italian, Portuguese (also referred to as Termo), Polish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish (also referred to as Ordlig and Ordle).
Other variations are Absurdle in which the target word changes after each guess, Sweardle in which the target word is a swear word, and Nerdle in which players have to guess a calculation.
Inspiration
The Wordle game is based on various other games:
- Lingo: Contestants in this game show have five guesses to guess a five letter mystery word. The first letter is given. After each guess, feedback is given similar to the feedback in Wordle: a correct letter in the correct position is indicated in red, a correct letter in the wrong position is indicated in yellow.
- Jotto: Two players pick a secret word and take turns trying to guess the word of their opponent. Feedback is given about how many letters in the guess also appear in the secret word.
- Mastermind: The codemaker creates a secret code of four colored pegs. The codebreaker tries to guess the secret code by making guesses consisting of four colored pegs. After each guess, the codemaker gives feedback: a black peg for a correct color in the correct position, and a white peg for a correct color in the wrong position.
