President card game rules

Players

The President card game can be played by three or more players. In the version on our website, the game is played with four players.

Cards

The game is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. The suits of the cards have no significance in this game.

The cards are ranked as follows from high to low: 2 - A - K - Q - J - 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 -6 - 5 - 4 - 3.

Objective

The objective of the game is to get rid of all your cards as quickly as possible. The first player that gets rid of all their cards is called the President. The last player that still has cards in their hand also gets a special title (e.g. Scum or Asshole) and will have to give their best card to the President in the next round.

Deal

All 52 cards are dealt out in a clockwise direction. Note that when not playing with four players, some players may end up with an extra card compared to others.

After dealing all cards, the President gives his worst card to the Scum, and gets the Scum’s best card in return.

Gameplay

The game is played in rounds. The player who won the previous round (the President) starts by playing any number of cards of equal rank (e.g. two fives).

The player to the left of the starting player then plays an equal amount of cards that are higher in rank (e.g. two sevens, but not again two fives because they must be higher in rank). The play continues in a clockwise direction.

If a player cannot or chooses not to play cards, they must pass their turn. When all players have passed, the player who last played a card can play a combination of cards of their choice (as long as they are of equal rank).

The round ends when all players except one got rid of all their cards.

Variations

There are many variations to the rules of the President card game. Some examples:

History

The President card game probably has Chinese origins. Many card games of the same type (called climbing games) have been known for a while in China, e.g. the game Zheng Shangyou. In the Western world they only became popular since the 1970’s. Another Asian game similar to President is the Japanese card game Daifugō, also known as Daihinmin.
